Amateur Extra licensing workshop at the Amateur Radio Club of El Cajon, California

Dates: Tuesdays & Thursdays (the start date has been rescheduled to October 21. This is the second schedule change and it is suggested you verify the schedule with ARC El Cajon, in case there are further changes...).

The classes will begin 21 October with a math review. They will be held every Tuesday and Thursday, and are scheduled to end by 16 December. Bob Bostic, KB7NG, is the instructor; he is an electrical engineer.

Time: 7 PM - 9PM.

Location: El Cajon Fire Station, S. Magnolia & E. Lexington - in the basement. Enter from the parking lot in back. Do not enter the fire station.

The Amateur Extra class licensee is permitted all available U.S. Amateur Radio operating privileges on all bands and all modes. Earning the license is more difficult; it requires passing a thorough 50 question examination. Extra class licensees must also have passed all previous license class written examinations, including a five word-per-minute Morse code test. About 15 percent
of licensed operators earn the Extra class.

Topics-Origins of mathematics & numbers, definitions, laws for operations, inverses, powers, exponents, roots, Metric prefixes, Dimensional analysis.

Special notes-homework:

  • Demonstrate square root calculations to 10 places. Solve: the square root of 2, to 10 places, using a manually composed algorithm method.
  • Demonstrate the assigned dimensional analysis conversion: Solve "c" (speed of light) in ft/sec, given there are 5280 feet in a mile.

Topics: definitions of trigonometric functions, magnitude and phase angle, practical trigonometry, laws of sines and cosines, vectors and phasors, Lissajous figures, harmonic distortion.

There is no class scheduled for November 2, 2004 - Club board meeting.
